Commercial Security Guard Training Programme

In early 2005, as part of the Government’s employment reforms, a ‘Commercial Security Guard Training Programme’ (STP) was initiated and implemented in one of the Gulf States. The main purpose of the STP was to replace the existing contracted ex-pat workforce with trained local national employees. Not only would this bring meaningful employment to the country but also provide sufficient qualified security staff within the oil sector to meet the ever increasing security demands placed upon them.

Later that year HSEeurope were selected to provide the training for the STP to ensure that these new trainees received the necessary training, coaching and mentoring to give them the theoretical and practical skills required to fulfil their future role.

The programme is both classroom and practical based. The initial phase of the programme consists of the students training for the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Security Operations, a 300 hour tutor led course. The students have the benefit of drawing from the experience of their respective trainers, all of whom have vast operational experience coupled with extensive training expertise.

Students are tested on their subject knowledge in the form of both written and practical assessments which have to meet the UK national standard to be eligible for the diploma. After successful completion of the BTEC course students are then placed on a 3-month on-the-job (OJT) training programme where all the elements of the course are put into practice and monitored by the training staff.

After OJT training, students are given the opportunity to undertake the Level 3 Award in Advanced Security Operations, a demanding two week intensive course covering both health and safety and security risk assessments.

By the end of 2007, more than 1000 security guards will have successfully completed their diploma and joined major oil sector companies as professional security guards.

Their training has already proved invaluable. Many have been involved with the preparation and implementation of security arrangements in receiving VIP guests, including the Minister of Oil and a visit from the British Royal Family earlier in May 2007.

Female Security Guard Training Programme

As part of a recent pilot programme, the first intake of female security guards has recently begun the STP course. They are following the same programme as their male counterparts and are also preparing for their entry into the security industry. They will play an important role in representing the first national females to be employed in this male dominated profession.
